After Pitchfork’s first story about sexual misconduct allegations against Kozelek was published in August 2020, the woman who was the subject of the Reddit post understood more clearly what Ella meant in her message to her boyfriend, and contacted her directly to thank her. Ella, who was unaware of whether the meeting ever transpired, says she was “incredibly relieved” to receive the message. Connie C., a locally celebrated singer and cabaret performer in San Francisco, had asked Red House Painters to open for her while the band was finding its feet in the early ’90s, and dated Kozelek briefly in the summer of 1992. In April of the following year, she says, Kozelek invited her to sing with him in a series of radio performances on a publicity tour of Europe. Their romantic relationship had ended, and Connie was engaged to another man, but she and Kozelek remained friendly. He presented the invitation as a gesture of thanks for the support she’d offered early in his career, she says, and promised her she’d have her own hotel room in each city they visited.

On November 1, 2018, Mark released Sun Kil Moon's This Is My Dinner, an album written during a November 2017 European tour. The album details Mark's experiences during that tour and his history with touring Europe since the early 1990s. In December of 2019, Mark Kozelek and actor Kevin Corrigan released a Christmas EP entitled, The Christmas EP. Kevin and Mark also released the two collaborative books The Panther and The Honey Badger and Zhao Tao. Mark also released a book of photography in late 2019 called 500 Payphones.

It's the most you can hope for as far as reissues go, and it really does feel like a skeleton key returning to these albums you thought you knew so well. Like Ella’s, Laura’s first encounter with Kozelek began with an invitation to join him onstage. (She also requested to use a pseudonym in this article.) A singer-songwriter herself, she met Kozelek at a show in Australia in 2017, when she was 37 and he was 50. He brought her up from the crowd to sing his song “I Can’t Live Without My Mother’s Love” with him—audience duets on the song were a somewhat regular occurrence in his show at the time—and she accompanied him on four more songs after that.

Between 1992 and 1999 Mark released six full length studio albums with Red House Painters. Three women have come forward with allegations of sexual misconduct against musician Mark Kozelek, who frequently performs as Sun Kil Moon. The accusations were published by Pitchfork on Thursday in a report by Amy Zimmerman. Mark Kozelek, the singer-songwriter behind Sun Kil Moon and Red House Painters, has been accused of sexual misconduct by seven more women, Pitchfork reports. The accusations follow an earlier Pitchfork report from last summer that detailed Kozelek exposing himself without permission and pressuring women into sex.

Eventually, the cab arrived, and Anjuli had to “basically push him out the door,” she says. In December of 2008, Mark released The Finally LP, a rarities collection featuring covers of Husker Du, Stephen Sondheim, Kath Bloom, Low, and others. A hardback edition of Nights of Passed Over, a collection of Mark's lyrics originally published in a limited edition in Portugal in 2002, was also released in 2008. The book includes a preface by Mark and a 12-song rarities CD entitled Nights LP.

In fact, it was quite some time before I actually listened to the whole thing all the way through. Every morning and evening, driving to and from work, I would start at the beginning, "24" (I know, I know, what more do you need to hear, right? What a song.), but only get about half way through that and whatever the second song on the tape was before arriving home/at 4AD. When I finally did listen to the full 90 minutes I called young Mark K. In 2007, Drummer Boy was released on vinyl as White Christmas & Little Drummer Boy Live as a 4 LP set.

According to Ella, Kozelek invited her to dinner the following night, and from there to his hotel room. Throughout their conversations, she was dizzied by her sudden closeness to this artist she admired. She says that he stressed repeatedly that he saw her as a potential friend and nothing more, seeming eager to dispel any ideas she might have about his sexual interest in her.
The album received some of Kozelek's best reviews including a 9 out of 10 in Uncut Magazine and an A- at Consequence Of Sound. In 2015 Mark also released a free EP entitled Down In The Willow Garden as well as a spoken word album entitled Dreams Of Childhood with Argentine actor Nicolas Pauls. Kozelek's music is also featured extensively in the Paulo Sorrentino film Youth.

The next day, she says Kozelek invited her to travel to the next show with him and his band, which she agreed to; the following night, she alleges, they had a consensual sexual encounter and said “I love you” to each other before Kozelek departed. The start of "24" is nearly silent—gentle minimal guitar before drums come in; it almost sounds like the start of a Codeine track. These songs were demos, and are lightly touched up for the proper 4AD debut, but still sound spare and homemade and thin in the best way (a way that works with the confessional tone of the material).
“As a way of appeasing him in the moment,” Laura says, she allowed him to spoon her. He made a few more sexual comments, she says, and after she made it clear she wasn’t interested, he eventually fell asleep. In the morning, Laura drove to her sister’s house and told her what had happened, her sister confirmed to Pitchfork.
Affecting and engrossing in spite of its nearly 10-minute running time, "Lost Verses" fits seamlessly alongside Kozelek's best work with Red House Painters. On “24,” the magisterial slowcore opening track to Red House Painters' debut album Down Colorfull Hill, Mark Kozelek takes the perspective of someone aged 24, worrying about growing old. The track starts off almost completely silent, with extremely soft minimal guitars, before the drums come in. The final album on the box, and his last for 4AD, is 1995's Ocean Beach. It opens with a sunny, lilting instrumental called "Cabezon", three breezy minutes of pleasant music. The album, in general, seems to be Kozelek's California record, and stands out from what came before it.
This was all before the Internet, so you basically had what a jewel box told you. It's hard to imagine at this point, but when I first heard them, I didn't know anything about Mark Kozelek, the frontman and mastermind behind the project. I'm not sure I knew his name, and I definitely didn't know what he looked like, or his personality outside of the songs. I also had no idea the band was a quartet, or that they lived in San Francisco (in Kozelek's case, via Ohio). At least for me, Red House Painters existed outside of a scene, too. They had a familiar record label with its own distinct aesthetic, but that was the only real touchstone.
